MINING AND TOURISM

In Armenia, the myth still persists that mining and tourism are incompatible within the same area. However, numerous examples from around the world prove the opposite. In many countries, mining and tourism are not only compatible but can also complement each other.
In Switzerland, recreational zones have developed alongside mines. In Canada, mining sites are being transformed into tourist destinations. In Chile, the Atacama Desert, despite the presence of large mining operations, has preserved its natural beauty thanks to strict environmental regulations. A similar example is Kiruna in Sweden, where mining provides the economic foundation, while tourism—especially Northern Lights viewing and the famous Ice Hotel—shapes the city’s international reputation.
These examples demonstrate that with balanced planning, proper environmental assessments, and effective land-use management, mining and tourism can successfully coexist within the same area, ensuring a sustainable and diversified economy.
